Cosy up for Autumn

As the chill sets in and the leaves begin to turn, we’re still feeling a bit all at sea with everything that’s going on in the world! COVID-19 has taken so much from us all, in so many different ways, but we don’t think you should be robbed of enjoying the cosy charms of the autumn season.

It might feel pointless getting excited about anything right now but increasingly people are treating autumn as something to celebrate – there’s no better feeling than being safe, warm and cosy.

Unsure how to get into the swing of this beautiful time of year? Look no further. Here are some tips and tricks to ready your home for a cosy autumnal season.

cosy autumn

Snuggle in

It’s pointless trying to get cosy without something to snuggle into! Embrace the feeling of cosy this autumn through supersized knitted blankets and throws – a statement throw can instantly transform the look and feel of your living room or bedroom.

If your blankets and throws have been stored away since last winter, refresh them by laundering them first. Oversized chunky knits are still at large in homeware departments should you want to treat yourself.

Quilts and duvets create a cosy vibe to any bedroom or living room, and they’re an ideal companion for chilly nights at home with a movie and so easy to clean the covers of. When it comes to colour, make a bolder statement with a bright quilt that contrasts your bedding – take the opportunity to add a seasonal theme to your home!

Layer up

Textiles are the best way to introduce autumn to the house, but this extends beyond a blanket. Classic, heavy textures like velvet, sheepskin and suede can be utilised on curtains, rugs and even furniture!

When it comes to cushions, just change your pillowcases out for the season – you don’t want to be burdened with loads of cushion inserts stuffed into an airing cupboard most of the year.

Fall in the hall

The hallway will need a seasonal overhaul, too! It’s time to wave goodbye to sandals and sun hats for the next few months because you’ll need room for heavier outerwear.

Your winter coats will need ample, robust hooks and room for umbrellas if you use them frequently. A little basket next to the door will keep inventory of gloves, hats and scarves, and if you’re quite the rambler, you might need enough floor space for wellies and walking boots.

Scents of the season

The most immediate way to invite the cosy feel of autumn into your home is to burn autumnal seasonal candles, wax burners, set out a reed diffuser etc. A candle’s crackling flam brings a comforting feel to any room in your home and is a must-have.

Look for rich and warming scents combining amber, pumpkin spice, oak and musk – they’re ideal to capture the aroma of a crackling open fire.

Twinkle, twinkle…

With autumn comes shorter days and dark nights. Rather than mourn the loss of sunny evenings outside, indulge in extra lighting to add a soft, festive touch to any room.

Fairy lights can be strung from pretty much anywhere, but if you prefer everything in its place – fairy lights look enchanting bundled into a mason jar. Bulb-shaped lights bring any space a snug feel without the room being in complete darkness or flooded with light.

 Sweeping for Santa

If you’re lucky enough to have a working fireplace or wood-burning stove, now’s the time to prepare it for use. It’s important to have your chimney swept and tested once a year!

Look for a chimney sweep who’s registered with the National Association of Chimney Sweeps or the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps.

You need to start thinking about collecting firewood and kindling or arranging for a delivery, and invest in a couple of baskets to store it next to the fire. It is also vital that your smoke alarms are all operating perfectly.

Get outside

We’re advocating for evenings cosied up at home with a hot chocolate (or mulled wine!) surrounded by soft furnishings and gentle light, so telling you to get outside seems counterproductive!

Well, we think you should get out in the bracing fresh air for some inspiration. By immersing yourself in autumnal bliss on a walk or quaint pub lunch, you’ll enjoy the benefit of getting exercise surrounded by beautiful scenery.

As you wander, you might find some pretty autumn twigs to make for a authentic table centre, or find some leaves and flower to experiment with decoupage, greetings cards or even something worth drawing and painting.

Much maligned as heralding the death of the summer, we think there’s a lot to be said for autumn – it’s magic!
